The Greatest Hot Chocolate for Christmas Time

Christmas is a time to get cozy, and nothing beats curling up under your favourite blanket, with your favourite mug, filled with a proper winter warmer… no not mulled wine, hot chocolate!

At Christmas all the coffee shops get a bit more creative with their flavours, and you get things like gingerbread, mint, amoretti and my personal favourite tiramisu!

What I’m doing today though is going to help you bring your coffee shop treat to your home, and show you how I make a devilish, sweet, frothy hot chocolate.

You are going to need:

  • Milk
  • Hot chocolate powder – any flavour will do
  • Sugar (optional)
  • Marshmallows (must have!)
  • A saucepan
  • Your favourite mug

Method:

Step 1.

Use your mug to measure the amount of milk you will need. (Remember to leave room for adjustment, once you have powder in your mug your level will sit higher – plus you need room for marshmallows)

Step 2.

Pour the milk into the saucepan and add 2 teaspoons of sugar (optional, but I love mine sweet!)

Step 3.

Heap 2 teaspoons of your hot chocolate powder into your now empty mug.

Step 4.

Heat the milk, whilst constantly stirring – this is what makes the hot chocolate frothy!

Step 5.

Once the milk has started to bubble it is ready to pour into your mug. To make sure you get that frothy finish stir as you pour.

Step 6.

Top with marshmallows, maybe some whipped cream and chocolate/caramel sauce if you’re feeling indulgent, and sit back and enjoy!

This basic technique has amazing results, and depending on what you are in the mood for, there are all sorts of different flavours to try!

Here are some of my favourites:

Options Honeycomb – really nice even made with water! A lot of instant hot chocolates I find a bit meh when made with water, but Options are actually really good!

Whittards Praline flavour, white hot chocolate  – a definite treat, I save this one for special occasions.

Any hot chocolate powder with a splash of toffee caramel flavouring

Adding a dash of Bailey’s – for an evening treat! (Please always drink responsibly)

Extra! Extra! Hot Chocolate Bombe Experiment

So this year I’ve noticed a new way of hot chocolate-ing… the hot chocolate bombe. (I may just be behind the times but I thought I’d share my new discovery)

I thought they would make a brilliant Christmas present for secret Santa or a stocking filler, but thought I should give it a go for myself first – just to be sure 😍

Here goes nothing!

I have to say, I am pleasantly surprised! It was sweet, it was chocolatey, it had marshmallows included… what’s not to like?! I would definitely recommend this for the chocolate lover in your life, for Christmas, maybe with a mug and snuggly socks? This would be a wonderful package to receive, and I’m sure very welcome!

Get in touch and let us know what your favourite hot chocolate is, or if you have any recipes you’d like us to try!

Merry Christmas all!
